VAT is the third element, and the one most easily misunderstood, since the rate depends on where the charter takes place and how it is structured. Within EU waters, VAT can apply at rates commonly cited between 5.2 and 13 percent depending on jurisdiction and the specific charter arrangement, and it is charged on top of the base fee. A consultant working on a contract should set out clearly which rate applies to a given itinerary and why, rather than leaving the figure as a footnote.

Buyers new to the yacht sales process often expect a purchase to move at the pace of a car sale: an offer, an inspection, a signature, done within a couple of weeks. In practice, a yacht purchase runs on a longer and more careful timeline, and understanding why helps set realistic expectations from the outset.

A yacht management consultant takes over, or in some cases runs in parallel, once a vessel is owned and in operation. This role covers the ongoing running of the yacht: crew recruitment and payroll, maintenance scheduling, budgeting for running costs, insurance renewal, regulatory compliance, and coordinating refits or repairs. Where a sales consultant's engagement is largely finite, a management consultant's role is continuous for as long as the owner holds the vessel.

Timeline is worth pressing on directly. Ask how long survey, sea trial, negotiation and paperwork typically take from offer to completion, and what could extend that. Buyers who expect a purchase to close in a fortnight are often disappointed, and a consultant working to a realistic schedule will say so plainly.

Raise the survey question directly during the viewing itself: what has already been surveyed, when, and would the seller support an independent survey of the buyer's choosing rather than relying on an existing report. A seller and consultant comfortable with independent verification is a good sign in itself.
